..Is it possible to not gain 10 pounds in Winter Season...?
Winter.... Days are colder and shorter, it’s getting dark very early, everyone's moods are more serious and in the morning you would rather stay in bed a little longer than usual, right?
I would like to cheer you up on this occasion and introduce a series of blog posts between December, January, and February that will guide you how to make this Winter a truly festive season and enjoy the process of letting go...
This time of the year one of the most common goals amongst my clients is to not gain weight over Christmas and stay fit in Winter... Some of them would also like to get practical advice on how to bring their energy levels up.... And many are interested to find out how to not get any unexpected colds and flues (small advice: I would suggest to experiment with swapping your regular lattes for my favourite Turmeric - Almond milk latte).
And for now... I would like you to settle down in the positive mood for this festive time :)
With this I do not mean getting too excited by Christmas shopping, but rather think of finding a few moments for self-reflection and stillness. Listen to yourself and let your body and mind be where they want to be. Winter is the time when there is already lots of stress and your nervous system is especially sensitive. For example in Traditional Chinese Medicine, that teaches to live according to the seasons and stay in harmony with nature, winter is associated with stress hormone producing organs - adrenals and it is a recommended time to a dedicated slow down.
I am sure you have been running around with your busy lives for a whole year, and you might never even been able to find a moment for your self - care... This is actually is a very common situation for many of my clients who come to me for training, coaching or nutrition.
If you feel that this relates to you, here are a few tips that will help you to enjoy Winter by approaching some common things in a different way.
1. Engage with wisdom and instincts of your body
Your physical needs are an integral part of who you are as a human so connecting with your body to feel grounded in a physical self would be a number one tip during the Winter season. For this reason, I would encourage you to give more attention to your recovery, which means to pay attention to the natural Circadian clock rhythm and your own sleeping pattern.
"Circadian rhythms are physical, mental and behavioural changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, responding primarily to light and darkness in an organism's environment. " What this means to you is to try going to listen to your body and understand when you are actually starting to get sleepy. If that happens at 9, 10 or 11 pm experiment and try to go to bed earlier in accordance with natural cycles of the day. If you feel sleepy during the day make sure to have at least 8 hours of sleep every night and... after some time you might discover that you do not need so desperately your double espresso first thing in the morning after waking up. Apart from regular sleeping try supporting your day to day functioning with Vitamin D supplement that will compensate the lack of sun exposure, one of the main reasons for low mood and energy level in winter. People are really surprised after feeling the positive effect of seemingly such a small effort and the difference that it makes for their wellbeing.
Remember - sleeping deprivation is never beneficial for your weight loss and can actually make you gain body weight. Lack of sleep affects the functions of the master organ of your metabolism - Thyroid. Therefore if you are planning to jump to January New Year resolution better be ready and start with some quality sleep.
2. Emotional Mastery with a Christmas indulgences
I can hear you saying: “.....but it is a Christmas time ....everyone eats and drink and let's go…”
Letting go does not mean losing the awareness and connection with yourself.
Even I will have a glass of red wine and a gluten free cake on this occasion :)
My point is to welcome all emotions that are coming into your life at this time of the year and let yourself think of food more as of an energy in motion. What if the energy you will eat or drink will be very low in life vibrations and will set you up for a morning headache, bring your body weight up, take away your good night sleep, affect your personal relationship or make you feel unhappy with yourself?
Celebrate this time with at least an inch of awareness and mindset that you are doing the best you can. Being easy and comfortable with yourself will actually allow you to let go and you might not even need to reach into food and drink patterns you were finding yourself in all the previous years before.
3. Did you get a Christmas Party invitation?
Ok, I hope you will love this!!!
Of course, you should go to your Christmas parties and be open to any invitation you get for this year’s Christmas feasts.
I just got one from Ultimate Performance in London and another one from Flavour Garden, a beautiful organic restaurant where I will be running my Wellness and Functional Nutrition Breakfast club starting from January (I will give more info about it very soon)
...Exciting times, I must tell you!
Christmas is the time of gathering in your social circles, it might be your family, friends, workmates, your wife, ex- wife, ex-husband or other significant people.. Or maybe you do not have someone to share those festive moments then it is the perfect time to change that! Think of social places that match your interests and go and enjoy yourself..
All these gatherings are based on our basic human needs, desire to belong, have our roots and are actually really necessary for the optimum health and well-being. There is nothing fussy about it and it should not feel like a responsibility.
However, even following Christmas traditions must agree with you and who you are in the present moment. It feels hard saying this, but if you do not fancy seeing anyone, engage in any social activities or follow anything that is not true for you anymore… just stay authentic with yourself.
For your own health and well-being, this will be much better option. Just stay in your own company and give yourself self-love and self-compassion. You are a wonderful human being. Just be.
What is Christmas like for me? I just love it :)
For me, personally, Christmas is a time of self-reflection, time to explore the memories from the previous year. And it feels very authentic to share this time with my family and friends. I love the warmness of the season in my heart even when outside it is a dark and cold…
Stay in tune for my weekly blogs and share this with anyone who you think might benefit from reading it.
Lots of love,
